An unprecedented amount of ticket sales and 25 consecutive draws without a winner pushed the jackpot to a record $1.53 billion in October 2018, before one player from South Carolina pocketed the lot. They became the state’s first Mega Millions jackpot winner and could choose between the full jackpot amount as an annuity of a cash value of around $878 million. The lucky participant also smashed the record for the biggest win on a single ticket for any lottery in the world, landing more than double the previous high mark.
2) $656 million - March 30th 2012
A run of 18 rollovers pushed the jackpot up to a new record in March 2012, before three winning tickets split the money to pocket $218 million each before taxes. A small group of work colleagues from Milford Mill in Maryland, known as ‘The Three Amigos’, claimed one share of the prize. A player from Ottawa became Kansas’ first Mega Millions jackpot winner, and opted to stay anonymous. The final third of the jackpot went to Merle and Patricia Butler of Red Bull in Illinois, who said they ‘giggled for hours’ when they found out.
3) $648 million - December 17th 2013
Two lucky players matched the full winning line in this draw to pick up $324 million each. Delivery driver Steve Tran from California woke up at 3am one morning with a sudden urge to check his tickets and quickly found out that he was a winner, allowing him to immediately call his boss and say he wouldn’t be in ‘today, tomorrow or ever’. The second winning entry belonged to Ira Curry of Stone Mountain in Georgia, who revealed that she had used family birthdays when selecting her numbers.

A syndicate of 11 office workers from Santa Clara County in San Jose, California, snapped up a colossal jackpot in the summer of 2018 after a ‘spur of the moment’ decision to buy a ticket at the local Ernie’s Liquors store. They all insisted they wanted to carry on working and their main focus was on using the money to help loved ones.
5) $536 million - July 24th 2018
A family from Indiana broke the record for the largest Hoosier Lottery win after stopping off at a gas station in Cambridge City and purchasing five Mega Millions lines. They claimed the money under a trust called Warren D, LLC, and decided to take the cash option of $378 million before taxes.
6) $533 million - March 30th 2018
Richard Wahl, a food production manager from Vernon in New Jersey, said ‘God has a plan’ for him to help other people’s lives after he came forward to claim his nine-figure jackpot. Wahl opted for the lump sum and was expected to take home about $175 million after taxes.
7) $451 million - January 5th 2018
Shane Missler from Port Richey in Florida was able to announce his retirement at the age of just 20 following this enormous Mega Millions win. Claiming the prize through a trust called Secret 007 LLC, Missler, who would not have been old enough to play in some states, said he would pursue his passions, have fun and ‘do some good for humanity’.
8) $425 million - January 1st 2019
A single ticket holder scooped a colossal jackpot on New Year’s Day 2019, matching all the numbers drawn to become New York’s biggest Mega Millions winner of all time. The top prize had been rolling over for 19 straight draws before it was won. The winning entry was bought on Long Island, at the Brookville Auto Service Shop in Glen Head.
9) $414 million - March 18th 2014
There were two winning tickets for this jackpot, with each lucky entry worth $207 million before taxes. One player bought their ticket in La Plata, Maryland, and decided to stay anonymous, while the other half was paid to the Cobie and Seamus Trust of Merritt Island in Florida.
10) $393 million - August 11th 2017
